For expert witnesses, repeat and word-of-mouth business are likely to be the most important marketing techniques you use. They will almost certainly be the most cost-effective as well.
The authors recently surveyed over 250 expert witnesses. Sixty-nine percent of the respondents reported that at least 50% of their business comes from word-of-mouth and repeat business. Indeed, 29% reported that word-of-mouth and repeat business were responsible for at least 90% of their expert witness business.
The way to generate large amounts of repeat and word-of-mouth business is through positive branding—building a reputation for quality and value in the legal community.
